DracoDaatson and Akhtar win 7th Engine Masters

By Arno Nickel

Unlike previous Engine Masters tournaments the final winner, DracoDaatson (Eros Riccio / Italy), started by losing his first round game as Black versus DON007 (Vasid Chauhan / India). Who did ever expect him to recover in such a successful way and win 5 games with White? I guess, he himself did not lose confidence, as he belongs to the "born winners". (They always stay "born winners", even if they don't win.) This is Eros' first great win in an engine tour, while he already has been a well-known Freestyle Champion since many years, Grand Master in correspondence chess and nowadays first board of the Italian team in the 18th ICCF Correspondence Chess Olympiad. We might be right, assuming that Eros' success was mainly based on a his engine book. In this tour he played with Komodo 8 on a 6 core i7 x980.

The second winner, Akhtar (Akhtar Saeed Hashmi / UAE), had a perfect start with Cryptic Heroes 2.6D on his 20 core Xeon E5-2690, and after a lucky win versus CoffeeOne (Peter Zsifkovits / Austria) whose Komodo engine suffered from a bad time management, all looked very fine for Akhtar, same as for Hardcore (Randy Sands / USA), both leading with 5 points out of 7 games. Yet, in round 10, Akhtar's Cryptic lost a difficult endgame with minor pieces versus Eros' Komodo 8. Finally, a win with Black in round 14 versus VodkaMaster21 (Deepak Vohra / India), running Stockfish 5, brought him back on top. It was Akhtar's second win of a second prize. Once again, many decisive games happened in the Semi Slav, starting with 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6, which turned out to be less drawish than many other fashionable openings.

If someone could be called "last round loser" in this tour, we have to mention Hardcore (Randy Sands / USA), who was co-leader from round 4 to 14, winning 3 games and losing none. He missed the prize money by just 0,5 Buchholz. That's bad luck. Randy, who run Stockfish 5 with CTG book on on a 24 core Xeon E7-4807, has already been among the top 10 in two previous Engine Masters tours.

The times with many new users in each Engine Masters seem to be gone, yet we met again an old friend from Freestyle Chess... Deepthroat (Mark Sabu / USA), one of the top Freestylers, played for the first time in this kind of tournament. He played with Stockfish and achieved a +1 score (8 of 15).

Not all of the 50 players who entered the tournament at round 1 were able to play all rounds. As the progression chart below shows, did 4 players miss one or two rounds due to technical problems. Ultra-d (David Evans / England) apologized after round 10 due to overheating his hardware. He had an even score when leaving. At the same time did Tombstone (Ademir Oliveira / Brazil) - sorry, I hate to type the long version of your user name ,-) - suffer a power cut He came back at round 15. I don't know, why we lost Alansaccount (Alan Sassler / USA) after round 7. Yet, despite this issues we managed to start all rounds with an even number of players, as we activated the Infinity Chess "bot" punisher for 3 rounds (= 3 draws) and approved a new player from round 4 to 13; MadMax777 (Renato Borelli / Brazil) achieved 5 out of 10.

I hope, InfinityChess will continue this much-loved tournament series, though by now I haven't got the green light for announcing the 8th Engine Masters. May be, due to the Team Cup 2015, scheduled for the 1st February, Infinity Chess is completely focussed on that event. Let's wait and see...

As usual we present the progression chart below (handmade). For the final crosstable look up here.
